Beutenberg-Campus Jena
The southern part of the city of Jena is home to the Beutenberg Campus, an internationally respected hub for science and research. Nine institutes are currently located here, including those of the Leibniz Association, the Max Planck Society and Fraunhofer Institute, the State of Thüringen and the Friedrich Schiller University. Two start-up hubs, the Jena Technology and Innovation Park and the BioInstrumentezentrum (bioinstrumentation centre), accommodate over 50 young companies. A total of approximately 3,400 employees currently work on the campus (correct as of Dec 2020). The Beutenberg campus acts as an interdisciplinary knowledge and technology platform for work in innovative research areas that have potential application for the future. It has flourished – and continues to do so – as a centre of excellence for research and development in line with its mission statement, “Life Science meets Physics”. The research that takes place here brings together the disciplines of biology, chemistry (including the chemistry of natural products), environmental research and medicine, in addition to the physics of microsystems, optics and precision mechanics. The campus therefore provides the ideal conditions for linking research activities efficiently and involving companies with the aim of developing innovative products. In 1998, the research institutions based at the Beutenberg campus merged to form Beutenberg-Campus Jena e.V. This non-profit association acts as a platform for strengthening collaboration, collectively representing the constituent institutions to the outside world and leveraging synergies to create value.
