Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI)

The main focus of the research at FLI is on molecular mechanisms that lead to a decline in the regenerative capacity and self-sustainability of organs and tissues during aging, that contribute to the development of aging-associated diseases and result in an increased risk of cancer. Since the causes are not yet sufficiently understood, treatment options for cancer and organ dysfunction in old age remain extremely limited. The FLI is making an important contribution to this medical and society-relevant problem in order to develop therapies that in the future enable healthy aging and prevent age-related diseases.

The Leibniz Graduate School on Aging (LGSA) is a joint activity of the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The LGSA provides ambitious training and research opportunities for graduates who wish to obtain a PhD in the fields of molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, structural biology, biophysics or systems biology.

The LGSA is a member of the Graduate Academy Jena and part of the Jena School of Molecular Medicine (JSMM) which has been established as an umbrella organisation for graduate programs in the field of Biomedicine in Jena. To strengthen Jena as a science and research location, the FLI cooperates very closely with the University of Jena and the University Hospital Jena (UKJ) and is closely linked to the interfaculty university Aging Research Center (ARC) and the Jena Centre for Healthy Ageing (ZGA) at the UKJ.
