Science & Society: Ethical aspects of the medical fight against aging

What is the significance of modern medicine for our self-image of life, for our life plans? How do the new possibilities in medical prediction and prevention affect individual life planning? What role does medical treatment and technical support play for a good life in old age?

Bioethicist Prof. Dr. Mark Schweda from Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg will answer these and other exciting questions in his lecture “Ethical aspects of the medical fight against aging” as part of the public lecture series “Science & Society” on March 16, 2023 in the lecture hall of the Abbe Center Beutenberg in Jena.

The biannual public lecture series “Science & Society” expands the basic scientific and medical research on aging conducted in Jena to include societal and social aspects and is organized by the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) together with the Beutenberg Campus Jena e.V..

Think Tank “Social Innovation in Times of Crisis”

Climate change, energy crisis or migration – our society is currently facing many challenges. At the Think Tank “Social Innovation in Times of Crisis”, experts from the city, science and society will discuss social approaches to solving these challenges on 15 March 2023 from 18:00-19:30 at the Jena Rathausdiele.

Jena citizens are cordially invited to participate in the discussion with their experiences and questions. Guests on the panel will include Eberhard Hertzsch, Head of the Department for Family, Education and Social Affairs of the City of Jena, Christine Schickert, Managing Director “Structural Change of Property”, University of Jena and Anna Uslowa, Head of Language Support at Kindersprachbrücke, Andreas Mehlich, District Manager Winzerla and lecturer at Ernst Abbe University and Julia Brade, Head of the Thuringian Centre for Intercultural Opening. The event will be moderated by Dana Strauß, managing director of the JenaVersum network.

Parallel events in Europe

The think tank in Jena is part of a Europe-wide series of events. Parallel events on the same topic will take place in six other cities. The results of all think tanks will be presented to the public on 25 May at the 6th EC2U Forum in Jena. The aim is to formulate a joint policy recommendation to strengthen knowledge transfer at local and European level.
